1406729 Aligning filter tips USINES DECOUFLE 19 Dec 1973 [4 Jan 1973] 58770/73 Heading A2C Apparatus for aligning filter rod comprises magazine 1 filled with filter rods T corresponding to four (or if desired any other multiple) filter tips; rods T are delivered to grooves on cutting drum 2, each rod being cut by blade 3 into plugs T 1 and T 2 having twice the length of the final product. Two intermediate conveyors are mounted about a common shaft 4, their radial arms 5, 6, of the same diameter serving to transfer plugs T 1 , T 2 from cutting drum 2 to recentering drum 7, the transverse grooves of which have a peripheral pitch P of for example 35 mm. There are an equal number of arms 5, 6 and their finger like extensions constitute a half-groove which are staggered by a half-pitch with respect to each other. During rotation of drum 7 two convergent ramps 8, 9 cause plugs T, T 2 to be realigned symmetrically to the centre of drum 7 prior to transfer to drum 10. Drum 2 comprises four coaxial discs 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d. Free gaps are provided between 2a, 2b and 2c, 2d to permit passage of arms 5, 6 therebetween. As shown in Fig 1, when a groove of drum 2 moves past postion A 1 , the half-groove 11 of arm 5a of the first conveyor begins extraction of plug T 1 . Transfer to drum 7 occurs with assistance of extractors 13 disposed on either side of arms 5. Because of their staggered relationship with respect to arms 5, arms 6 have deeper grooves 14 forming the plug engaging fingers to facilitate engagement of plugs T 2 nearer to centre O.

Guides 15 and 16 are installed between the drums 2 and b to feed the filters and remove them from the seals of the pallets 11 and 12. The horizontal axis 10 of the intermediate conveyor is set below the level 17 of the receiving drum 2 to ensure that the filters are fed to the drum tangentially.
The receiving drum 2 is made in the form of four coaxial disks with cells 18, installed in pairs at a distance of one pair from another, sufficient for passage between the fingers 11 and 12 of the intermediate conveyor, while one pair of discs serves to transport the lengths of 4 filters and the other pair disks - 5 filter segments.
The device works in the following way.
During the feeding process, the filters are first cut with a disk knife 3 into segments 4 and 5, the length of each of which is twice as long as the length of the cigarette filter.
The 4 filter sections are fed from the receiving drum 2 cells to the floor of the fingers 11, and the 5 segments to the floor of the fingers 12 and from them to the 7 cells of the drum 6,
When the cell of the drum 2 approaches the point A located on the same straight line with the center Qj of axis 10, then with the help of the cell 13 of the finger 11, the filter section 4 is removed from the cell of the drum 2 and transferred by the finger to the drum 6, while the filter section is supported by the directions 15 The transfer of the filter section 4 to the drum b is carried out with the help of the guide 16. The transfer of the segments with 5 fingers 12 is carried out in the same way as the transfer of the segments with 4 fingers 11,
Thus, segments 4 and 5 are alternately fed into the cells 7 of the conveyor 6, and when the half cell 14 starts extracting the cutting edge 5, the corresponding cell of the receiving f drum 2 is located at the point Af on the same receiving center 0 axis 10, i.e. . the cell of the said drum advances half-step along the circumference P of the drum cells with respect to its Position at the moment of the capture of the segment by the finger 11 of the intermediate conveyor.

The proposed device, compared with limestone technical solution of the same problem, is safer in operation and eliminates the deformation of filters during their transfer to the cigarette for making cigarettes.
